The art work “UKRAINIAN MADONNA” by Rudy Krymsky has become one of the symbols of the resilience of the Ukrainian people. Severe trials and shocks befell women, children, and civilians. From the first hours of the war, people in the cities and villages of Ukraine were forced to hide in basements from bombing and rocket attacks, and in Kyiv people fled to the subway and bomb shelters.

But the Ukrainians were ready to defend their Motherland. Many people joined the resistance as part of defence units, prepared Molotov cocktails, learned to provide first aid for wounds, and helped their soldiers with food, clothing, weapons, and equipment. Ukrainians demonstrated courage and resilience in resisting Russian aggression. They showed the world who we can be and who we need to be when we face the crises of our time, why it is worth fighting no matter whether you believe in victory or not.

Chaotic bombing of residential areas of Kyiv, Mariupol, Nikolaev, Odessa, Kharkov, Chernigov and many other cities of Ukraine caused the murder of thousands and thousands of civilians. The scale of the damage is enormous and continues to increase. Entire cities, such as Mariupol, are being wiped off the face of the earth. Clear atrocities are being committed that meet the criteria of war crimes. More than six million (at the time of writing) have been forced to leave Ukraine; many others were displaced internally.
